Appearance
Archivist Zaid ibn-Zayd cuts a tense, bird-like figure, all narrow shoulders, folded elbows, and sudden darting movements. His pale skin has the muted gray-beige cast of someone who has spent decades beneath stone, and fine blue static crawls across his cheeks whenever he becomes alarmed. Dark circles pool beneath his anxious eyes, which flick constantly toward locks, ceiling cracks, and invisible points in the air. His hair stands slightly on end from residual elemental discharge, giving him the look of a startled scholar caught in a permanent updraft. He moves with delicate precision until panic takes him, at which point he scuttles sideways like a heron avoiding deep water. Despite his fragile, nervous appearance, his hands are broad, callused, and unexpectedly strong from years of hauling vault doors and iron record chests. He leaves behind an impression of dust, ozone, old paper, and imminent disaster.
“Rapid, precise, and overqualified. Zaid speaks in catalog references, pressure readings, and increasingly alarming footnotes.”

Distinguishing Features
A heavy ring of master-keys large enough to serve as a weapon.
Perpetually raised hair sparking with faint blue electricity.
A thin burn scar shaped like a broken circle around his left wrist.
A memorized sequence of forbidden telemetry that he silently mouths when under stress.
One eyebrow is permanently lifted from an old warding accident.
Voice
“A high, dry tenor with a faint crackle beneath every word, as though his vocal cords are surrounded by distant static. He speaks faster when nervous and becomes unnervingly quiet when recalling forbidden telemetry.”
Clothing
Heavy layered monastic robes of charcoal, faded ocher, and iron-gray cloth, lined with lead-shielding runes. He wears fingerless leather gloves, a reinforced archivist's sash, soft-soled boots, and a hood fitted with copper grounding threads. A massive ring of master-keys hangs from his belt beside a glowing magnetic lantern.
Body Language
His shoulders remain hunched, his head tilts toward every sound, and his fingers constantly count invisible sequences against his thumb. When lying, he becomes perfectly still. When frightened, he smiles politely and begins arranging nearby objects by size.
