Hook
The capital's three rulers share one palace, but each district secretly runs on a different magical network.
Vaelthaum is a medieval world where magic is not rare, but infrastructure. Leylines feed mills, lamps, weapons, hospitals, and vast brass engines that bind distant cities together. The largest nation, the Triarchy of Vand, is governed by the Concord of Blood, Book, and Brass: a wizard, a sorcerer, and an artificer whose alliance brought order after centuries of magical war. Their system works, but every road, harvest, and household now depends on it.

Wars over leyline access shattered old alliances and poisoned several regions with failed enchantments, leaving ruins, grudges, and dangerous machines.
Vand united much of the known world under the Concord of Blood, Book, and Brass, but its efficient rule now faces rebellion, sabotage, and growing magical instability.

The Concord hires the party to escort a prototype engine through provinces that want to destroy it before it can replace local spellcasters.
A remote town stops receiving magical power, and the official explanation conflicts with evidence of deliberate sabotage by someone inside the Concord.
An old war machine awakens beneath a farming valley and recognizes the current rulers of Vand as descendants of its original enemies.
The Triarchy has quietly replaced dead rulers with engineered copies made from blood, memory, and brass.

The first magical infrastructure was built over a continent-sized prison for a defeated sorcerer-king.
Discovery · Leyline surveyors find ancient foundations beneath every major Vand power station.
Impact · The modern grid may be restoring a weapon rather than creating a public utility.
A natural magical current runs beneath ordinary people, and the Concord has never learned how to control it.
Discovery · Spells fail near certain villages while nearby machines continue operating without fuel.
Impact · Someone has discovered a source of magic outside the known leylines and is hiding it from every major power.
