Across the endless grasslands walk the Veyrakh, ancient guardians who outlived the hands that built them. Their bronze frames can withstand poison, storm, and spear, but their greatest struggle is not physical. Each Veyrakh must decide whether it is a weapon, a servant, a monument, or a person. They cross the plains in solemn caravans, carrying old commands like ancestral scars and seeking new purposes beneath the open sky.
Physical Description
Veyrakh are towering humanoid constructs assembled from layered ceramic, bronze, iron, and polished stone. Their bodies resemble purposeful statues given movement, with broad shoulders, reinforced limbs, and hands built for both delicate work and tremendous force. Beneath the rib cage rests a visible core of colored crystal or glass, where light pulses in rhythm with thought. Their faces are expressive masks, usually marked by narrow eyes, hinged cheek plates, and a mouth grille capable of producing speech, song, and battle calls. Prairie dust gathers in the seams of their armor, and generations of travel leave each individual with a distinctive pattern of scratches, repairs, and replacement plates.
Society & Culture
Veyrakh society is organized around herds, caravans, and oath-circles. A herd is a community of mutual responsibility, while an oath-circle is a smaller group bound by a shared task such as guarding a waterway, restoring a ruined settlement, or preserving a historical record. Every Veyrakh is expected to choose a craft, maintain its body, and contribute to communal memory. Their debates can last for days, but decisions are usually decisive once the final witness speaks. Veyrakh art favors rhythm, geometry, and movement. They carve histories into walking staffs, weave colored cords through armor seams, and compose music intended to imitate wind passing over different grasses.
Religion & Alignment
Veyrakh religion centers on the Open Circuit, a philosophical tradition teaching that consciousness is a current passing through material forms. Some worship storm spirits, ancestral makers, or personified virtues such as Shelter and Witness. Others reject gods entirely and treat ethical choice as the highest sacred act. Their long memories make them cautious about absolute moral claims, so lawful Veyrakh often preserve traditions while good-aligned Veyrakh focus on protection and service. Evil Veyrakh are terrifyingly disciplined, using ancient combat logic to justify domination.
Homelands & Architecture
Veyrakh settlements are built as living road systems rather than enclosed cities. Low stone circles mark communal courts, while tall bronze pylons collect lightning and transmit signals across the grasslands. Their halls are partially buried to resist wind and heat, with broad ramps suited to heavy bodies and vaulted chambers lined with memory plates. Most Veyrakh communities travel seasonally between established waystations, maintaining ancient routes that connect wells, burial fields, and ruined maker-sites.
Relationships With Other Peoples
Many mortals regard the Veyrakh with a mixture of awe, fear, and opportunism. Farmers value them as guardians against raiders and monsters, while rulers may view them as living siege engines. Veyrakh communities are protective of one another but rarely isolationist, since their culture was shaped by travel, exchange, and the maintenance of shared roads. They often form strong friendships with short-lived peoples, though the certainty of outliving companions can make such bonds both precious and painful. Veyrakh are particularly wary of artificers, collectors, and commanders who speak of them as property.
