Built as wardens, gardeners, porters, and companions, they were never meant to be warriors first, yet centuries of tending have made them resilient, observant, and quietly stubborn. A Mossbound adventurer may be seeking a lost maker, carrying a forgotten command, or simply trying to decide what kind of life a crafted being should build for itself.

Mossbound are humanoid constructs built from seasoned wood, woven roots, resin, bone, fired clay, and small amounts of metal. Their torsos resemble hollow tree trunks shaped into ribbed chests, while their limbs are jointed with leather, vine, or brass pins. A living mat of moss, lichen, or creeping fern grows across the body, drawing moisture and nutrients from the surrounding air and soil. Their faces are carved with simple features, though many add movable shutters, painted eyes, seed-pod ornaments, or strips of bark inscribed with expressions. They do not breathe, but they creak, click, and softly rustle as they move.

Mossbound culture centers on tending. Every member is expected to maintain something, whether a trail, a tool library, a family tradition, a garden, or a relationship. They record history through knot patterns, engraved plates, layered paint, and carefully cultivated moss. Instead of birthdays, they celebrate repairs, first independent journeys, completed apprenticeships, and the planting of replacement parts. Many Mossbound practice the Rite of Unbinding, a formal ceremony in which a construct reviews its original instructions and chooses which to keep, revise, or discard. Their communities tend to be calm, practical, and communal, but can become surprisingly contentious when different generations disagree about whether preservation or change is the greater form of wisdom.

Mossbound do not share a universal faith. Many revere cycles of growth, decay, and renewal, while others honor a maker, ancestral workshop, forest spirit, or household that gave them purpose. Their constructed nature does not determine their morality. Some are orderly and dutiful, while others become fiercely independent after rejecting the commands of their creators. Mossbound communities often favor traditions that balance preservation with adaptation.

Mossbound homelands are built around living trees rather than over them. Their workshops use root cellars, woven branch halls, suspended walkways, and stone foundations warmed by composting leaves. Doors are often designed for both flesh-and-blood visitors and construct bodies, with broad thresholds, low tool benches, and sheltered maintenance alcoves. A community's oldest members may be incorporated into the walls as speaking posts or memory pillars.

Mossbound often regard living peoples with a mixture of affection, caution, and careful study. They are accustomed to being assigned duties by druids, nobles, families, and guilds, so many communities have traditions about consent and self-determination to prevent them from being treated as property. Forest spirits may view them as useful cousins or intrusive imitations. Humanoids who live beside them commonly value their reliability, though some find their long memories and literal interpretations unsettling.
