They are curious without being careless, communal without being tame, and forever haunted by the knowledge that somewhere beyond the next threshold lies a place that may need them.

Vesperi are lithe beast-folk with long limbs, expressive ears, narrow muzzles, and soft coats that range from charcoal, russet, cream, smoke-blue, and moon-pale white. Their faces resemble a blend of hare, fox, and small deer, though no two family lines share exactly the same features. Fine sensory whiskers grow along the cheeks and wrists, detecting vibrations and changes in air pressure. Their large ears are often patterned with rings or eye-like markings, while their long tails may be plumed, tufted, or nearly hairless. Most Vesperi bear faint luminous markings on the throat, palms, or around the eyes. These markings brighten near portals, strong emotions, and creatures touched by other planes.

Vesperi society is organized around traveling circles, extended households, and oath-bound guides rather than hereditary rulers. Children are raised by the whole settlement, and every adult is expected to teach at least one practical art and one story. The most honored figures are veil-guides, who memorize routes through unstable realms, and memory-keepers, who preserve names, songs, maps, and accounts of disasters. Vesperi festivals often last several nights and include silent dances, scent-painted masks, lantern races, and contests to identify distant creatures by sound alone. Personal possessions are respected, but knowledge is expected to circulate. A secret that protects the vulnerable is sacred. A secret kept merely for prestige is considered a form of theft.

Vesperi religion centers on the Lantern Beyond, a symbolic presence believed to shine from the far side of every boundary. Some worship named spirits of roads, storms, stars, and forgotten animals, while others treat the Lantern as a philosophical metaphor. Their rituals emphasize safe passage, shared meals, remembrance, and the careful closing of doors. Vesperi communities tend toward benevolent neutrality, valuing freedom and mutual obligation over rigid law, but individual Vesperi may be ordered guardians, reckless wanderers, or secretive mystics.

Vesperi homelands are assembled around safe crossings, called hushgates, where one world brushes against another. Their dwellings combine woven root, lacquered bone, colored glass, and pale stone that remembers moonlight. Homes are rarely rectangular. They spiral around communal hearths, descend into sheltered burrows, or cling to the sides of enormous trees and floating islands. Doors are decorated with scent marks and tiny bells, allowing residents to identify visitors even in darkness. A Vesperi settlement is designed to be heard, smelled, and felt as much as seen.

Vesperi are hospitable to travelers, outsiders, and exiles, largely because their own ancestors survived by receiving shelter in unfamiliar worlds. They form strong friendships with communities that respect boundaries and keep promises. They are wary of empires that regulate travel, inquisitors who fear planar influence, and collectors who treat Vesperi relics as curiosities. Other beast-folk often recognize the Vesperi as kin, though the Vesperi themselves resist being reduced to a single animal ancestry. They consider every people a collection of individuals shaped by place, memory, and choice.
