The Covenant of the Fourfold Spark
Origin
In the earliest age, the world emerged from untamed elemental chaos. Fire raced across newborn stone, water swallowed unfinished valleys, wind tore the sky into ribbons, and earth buckled beneath all things. Ignis-Vael kindled the First Spark, then gathered ten divine powers around it. Together they established the Covenant, assigning sacred duties among Fire, Water, Air, and Earth & Balance. The gods did not eliminate elemental danger. They created a living tension that mortals must renew through craft, stewardship, travel, law, and sacrifice. Sybilla became the boundary keeper, ensuring that the Elemental Planes could nourish the Material Realm without overwhelming it.
Cosmology
Before form, the universe was untamed elemental chaos, a roaring convergence of flame, flood, gale, and stone. Ignis-Vael kindled the First Spark, and the other powers shaped it into a survivable cosmos. The Ember Hearth governs heat, craft, transformation, and endurance. The Deep Well governs rain, aquifers, and public survival. The Open Sky governs wind, travel, storms, and freedom. The Fourfold Core anchors physical and planar stability through earth, balance, knowledge, and thresholds. Sybilla the Threshold Keeper maintains the boundary between the Elemental Planes and the Material Realm, preventing the first chaos from returning.
Structure
The Covenant is organized into four major sacred colleges, each associated with an elemental pillar, and a central order devoted to balance. The Ember Hearth includes Ignis-Vael, Pyra, and Varek, with temples emphasizing craft, transformation, and endurance. The Deep Well includes Aethelgard, Mara, and Nereus, whose priests maintain water systems, weather rites, and underground sanctuaries. The Open Sky includes Zephyrus and Corvus, served by traveling shrines, courier chapels, navigators, and free-roaming prophets. The Fourfold Core includes Calyra and Vurnak as opposing teachings about stability and survival, while Sybilla's Threshold Keepers oversee the entire faith. Most temples contain four elemental braziers surrounding a central basin, with a doorway or arch dedicated to Sybilla. Vurnak's shrines are rarely public, appearing instead in counting houses, hidden chambers, prisons, and places where desperate bargains are made.
Mortal Relations
The Covenant is deeply engaged with mortal life. Its priests maintain hearths, cisterns, roads, weather shrines, mines, bridges, foundries, boundary wards, and trade agreements. Most communities honor several deities according to practical need rather than choosing a single exclusive patron. A blacksmith may invoke Ignis-Vael and Varek, a water administrator may serve Aethelgard and Nereus, and a caravan may leave offerings to Corvus, Zephyrus, and Mara. Temples often function as public institutions, while rival priesthoods debate how much sacrifice, freedom, or regulation true balance requires.
Afterlife
The faithful pass into the Resonant Beyond, where the four elemental currents become harmonious landscapes shaped by the soul's deepest service. Fire-guided souls tend radiant forges, water-servants dwell beside endless springs, air-devotees walk silver roads through open skies, and earth-keepers raise enduring halls. Sybilla the Threshold Keeper judges whether a spirit may cross fully, while Ignis-Vael's First Spark illuminates the path. Those who deliberately shattered sacred balance may be reborn into the mortal world carrying an elemental burden.
