The Eternal Flame
Origin
The Eternal Flame began when Lathander and Sune joined their powers to kindle the Divine Spark, creating the first living minds from a universe of cold silence. Istishia carried the newborn flame through the waters of the world, Odan taught it to recognize patterns among the stars, and Dendar emerged as the darkness that every flame casts behind itself. Mortals inherited fragments of the Spark and became co-creators of the world.
Cosmology
Before time, there was only the White Cold and the Unlit Dark. Lathander and Sune discovered the Divine Spark within the void and shaped the first living flame between them. From its heat came thought, life, desire, and the power to create. Istishia gave the spark motion through sea and storm; Odan gave it direction through wisdom and stars; Dendar emerged as the shadow cast by every flame, embodying death, entropy, and the certainty of an ending. The world survives because the five forces remain in tension: law contains fire, love nourishes it, nature transforms it, wisdom guides it, and death gives it urgency.
Structure
The religion is organized around Hearth-Conclaves, local councils that maintain a public flame and appoint five ritual offices: the Forgekeeper of Lathander, the Hearthwarden of Sune, the Tide-Bearer of Istishia, the Star-Reader of Odan, and the Quiet Keeper of Dendar. Most communities give Dendar only a funerary shrine, while remote northern settlements may honor all five equally. There is no universal high priest; instead, the five offices meet during major crises in a Convocation of Sparks. Lathander's clergy maintain laws and infrastructure, Sune's clergy provide care and hospitality, Istishia's clergy oversee trade and defense, Odan's clergy preserve knowledge and interpret omens, and Dendar's sanctioned mortuary priests handle death, burial, and the disposal of dangerous remnants.
Mortal Relations
The Eternal Flame is a mortal-engaged religion whose gods answer prayers through omens, inspirations, sudden opportunities, vivid dreams, changing weather, and improbable coincidences. Clerics and champions are expected to participate in the world rather than withdraw from it. A Lathander priest may establish laws or invent tools; a Sune priest may run a refuge or hospital; an Istishia priest may captain a ship or lead a rebellion; an Odan priest may guide a pilgrimage or preserve dangerous knowledge; and a Dendar priest may tend graves, explore forbidden depths, or sabotage institutions that prolong suffering. The faith has no single orthodoxy: temples often share a central hearth with five surrounding shrines, and congregations debate whether the Divine Spark is best protected by structure, compassion, freedom, understanding, or acceptance of endings.
Afterlife
The dead journey beneath the world into the Ashen Deep, where Dendar measures the cooling of their Divine Spark. Those who kept learning, creating, protecting, or meaningfully changing the world rise again as guiding embers in Odan's starry vault. Those who surrendered entirely to stagnation become fuel for Dendar's eternal winter. Sune shelters beloved souls in Hearthlight, while Istishia carries the restless dead across the Last Sea. Lathander alone judges whether a soul's final pact with existence was honored.
