This stout journal is bound in midnight-blue leather stitched with red thread and embossed with a brass compass rose. Its pages are made from pale, cloudlike paper that never yellows, though several bear scorch marks, salt stains, and tiny impressions resembling fairy footprints. The cover is secured by a clasp shaped like a crescent moon, and a narrow ribbon bookmark constantly shifts toward the nearest meaningful destination. When opened, the ink rearranges itself into moving maps, portraits, sketches, and marginal notes written in several hands. Some illustrations flutter like living paper, while distant sounds of wind, waves, or children's laughter can be heard from particularly important entries.
