The Whispering Ring - AI-generated fantasy Hazard

The Whispering Ring

The Whispering Ring is a patch of enchanted woodland that rearranges a traveler's sense of direction and distance. It does not harm the body directly. Instead, it steals a few moments of the victim's memory and sends them walking in an unexpected direction while the forest imitates the voices of their companions.

Detection

PerDC 11 Wisdom (Perception) or Intelligence (Nature) check to notice the unnatural mushroom circle and false trail before entering it.
StlThe hazard is naturally concealed by ordinary undergrowth. Before it is recognized, use the passive Wisdom (Perception) score of each character. Characters with a passive score of 11 or higher notice that the mushroom ring is unnatural.
InitN/A

A ring of pale mushrooms grows around a patch of moss where the forest floor appears unusually soft. Tiny bells made from acorn caps hang from nearby branches, though no breeze moves them. Anyone looking closely sees that the mushrooms grow in a perfect circle, with one gap just wide enough for a boot.

Standard Engagement

Trigger

A creature enters the mushroom ring, touches one of the mushrooms, or follows the false trail directly through the gap.

Routine

When triggered, the mushrooms chime softly and the surrounding forest briefly appears to lean in the wrong direction. The triggering creature makes the saving throw, then follows the false sound if it fails.

Reset

The hazard resets 1 minute after it triggers, though a creature that already failed its saving throw remains disoriented for the full duration.

Borrowed Direction

The creature must succeed on a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw or become disoriented for 10 minutes. While disoriented, it cannot benefit from nonmagical navigation, has disadvantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks made to track or find its way, and believes a harmless forest path is the safest route forward.

Fey Misdirection

On a failed saving throw, the creature also moves up to 60 feet in a random safe direction, following an illusory sound or familiar voice. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks, but the creature cannot willingly end the movement inside obvious physical danger.

Selective Glamour

The ring affects only a creature that enters the mushroom circle or deliberately touches one of the mushrooms. Creatures that are immune to being charmed automatically succeed on the saving throw, but still notice the misleading sounds.

One Victim at a Time

If two or more creatures enter the ring at the same time, only the first creature to step across the gap is affected. The fey magic prefers a single target and leaves the rest of the group with a clear view of what happened.

Seen Through the Trick

A creature that succeeds on the saving throw becomes aware that the forest sounds are false and is immune to this ring for 24 hours.

Description

The Whispering Ring is a patch of enchanted woodland that rearranges a traveler's sense of direction and distance. It does not harm the body directly. Instead, it steals a few moments of the victim's memory and sends them walking in an unexpected direction while the forest imitates the voices of their companions.

Discovery

The ring is discovered by noticing the unnatural mushroom circle, recognizing that the animal tracks stop before entering it, or hearing a familiar voice whispering from the wrong direction. A successful DC 11 Wisdom (Perception) or Intelligence (Nature) check reveals the danger before it is triggered.

Archival Lore

Old hunters say that the ring grows wherever a fey creature has been insulted, cheated, or bored for too long. The magic is rarely lethal, but it can separate companions, lead travelers toward a fey dwelling, or make a familiar forest seem impossibly large.
