The Vigilant Eye
The Vigilant Eye is an ancient magical ward built into a ruined entrance. It does not merely punish trespassers. It studies them, marks the boldest intruder, and turns the surrounding stone into a weapon. The ward is simple to run, but it creates a tense choice: move quickly and risk exposure, or spend time interpreting the dead civilization's ritual language.

Detection
“A waist-high stone plinth stands before a sealed archway, its surface carved with concentric rings and a shallow depression shaped like an open eye. Hairline cracks radiate from the eye socket, glowing with a faint blue-white light whenever living creatures approach.”
Standard Engagement
The ward activates when a creature crosses the sealed archway, touches the plinth, or removes an object placed in the eye-shaped depression without using the command gesture.
When triggered, the ward selects the nearest creature within 60 feet that it can see and fires its Judging Ray. If multiple creatures are equally near, it targets the creature carrying the most metal or magic items. The ward does not pursue targets or attack through total cover.
The ward resets after 1 minute and can trigger again whenever a creature crosses the sealed archway or touches the plinth without using the command gesture.
The ward fires a concentrated beam of blue-white force at one creature within 60 feet that it can see. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or take 4d8 force damage and become marked until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, the target takes half damage and is not marked.
A marked creature sheds dim blue light in a 10-foot radius, cannot benefit from being invisible, and has disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks until the mark ends. If the marked creature moves more than 30 feet from the plinth before the mark ends, it takes 2d6 force damage.
The ward cannot see through total cover. A creature behind a solid barrier is not a valid target, though touching the plinth or crossing the archway still triggers the hazard.
The ward prioritizes creatures carrying a relic, item bearing an ancient emblem, or active magical effect. If no such creature is present, it targets the nearest creature.
If the party speaks the ancient phrase engraved beneath the plinth, the ward remains dormant for 10 minutes. Discovering the phrase requires a successful DC 17 Intelligence (History) or Wisdom (Religion) check, or access to the original Synod records.
