The Sand-Gate Wardens - AI-generated fantasy Faction

The Sand-Gate Wardens

The Wardens began as a small escort corps guarding the first Verulanan toll road. Their authority expanded after the Gild-Ways linked the Sultanate to the wider Arcanterran network. During the Saltwind Expansion, they built watchtowers around wells and established the first standardized frontier tariffs. Their greatest triumph came in 1142 TF, when they held the Sand-Gate for nine days against a migrating storm elemental host, allowing thousands of civilians and three royal archives to escape inland. Their defining catastrophe was the Redglass Panic of 1196 TF. A caravan carrying unstable elemental aquifers shattered near the gate, transforming the surrounding barrens into a field of razor glass and violent heat mirages. The Wardens sealed the road, arrested hundreds, and executed suspected saboteurs. Later evidence showed that a Warden quartermaster had caused the disaster while attempting to conceal embezzled tariff crystals. The officer escaped, but the Wardens destroyed the records linking the scandal to senior command. Since then, their culture has prized controlled information almost as highly as discipline. In 1268 TF, the Gild-Way Frontier Barrens experienced the first coordinated attacks by elemental beasts. The Wardens repelled the assaults, but found strange black sand embedded in the creatures' bodies. The sand bore the same sigil etched on the ancient bronze gate. Today, the order stands between Verulana and a widening desert crisis while its leaders argue over whether the frontier needs stronger rule, greater autonomy, or the truth about what lies beneath the Sand-Gate.

Founder’s Story

The first Sand-Gate Wardens were formed after the Caravan of Seven Lamps vanished between Verulana and the eastern Gild-Way terminus. Three days later, the caravan returned as a procession of glass-skinned survivors, carrying an ancient bronze gate torn from the desert floor. The survivors claimed the gate had spoken in the voices of their dead and warned that the road was being watched from beneath the sand. Sultan Nasr al-Hadir ordered the gate installed at the frontier and appointed forty veterans to guard it. Those veterans became the first Wardens, swearing that no traveler would disappear beyond Verulana's border without an answer being sought.

The Mechanism of Intent

Public Goals
  • Keep the Gild-Way safe for lawful travelers
  • Protect Verulana from elemental beasts and desert raiders
  • Collect fair tariffs to maintain roads, wells, and garrisons
  • Preserve order along the Sultanate's eastern frontier
  • Support stable trade between Verulana and the wider Arcanterran realms
  • Secret Goals
  • Awaken the memories of the First Thirst without fully freeing it
  • Force the Sultanate to acknowledge the legal rights of frontier clans
  • Recover the original charter tablets that may invalidate modern tariff powers
  • Identify the Warden officers compromised by the Veiled Nightlords
  • Create a permanent cross-border defense pact before the Dawn Compact renewal crisis intensifies
  • Current Objectives
  • Keep the Sand-Gate Garrison operational through the next cycle of lunar mana surges.
  • Reinforce the exposed Gild-Way Frontier Barrens before elemental beasts sever the trade route.
  • Identify the source coordinating attacks by fire, dust, and storm creatures.
  • Force the Sultanate to recognize emergency frontier authority granted to Warden commanders.
  • Prevent merchants from discovering that several supposedly impassable desert routes remain open.
  • Long-Term Vision

A self-sustaining frontier protectorate where the Gild-Ways remain open, desert communities hold formal representation, elemental entities are treated as political forces rather than simple monsters, and the Wardens answer to both Verulana and the people they protect.

StructureChartered military order and frontier customs authority
SuccessionWhen the Gate-Marshal dies, resigns, or is removed, the Four Watches enter the Hall of Nine Lamps and each nominate one successor. The candidates must survive a ceremonial crossing of the barrens, settle a live tariff dispute, and spend one night beneath the bronze gate. The sitting Gate-Arbiters then cast weighted copper tokens, though the Sultanate may reject the result and appoint a replacement. This last power has never been used openly, but its existence fuels constant tension.
