The Solstice Foundries
For its first thirty years, the consortium functioned as a genuine compact among rival forge families. It standardized weights, protected caravans, and ended the furnace wars that had crippled Al-Zahir. Its first triumph was the construction of the Sunline Causeway, a glass-steel caravan road that crossed the desert without sinking into the dunes. Its second was the creation of heat-resistant glass armor, which allowed the Spires to survive a siege by the Veyr Dominion. The consortium changed during the Red Noon Catastrophe, when a vent eruption vaporized three workshops and turned an entire district into a field of red glass. The Solstice Table responded by declaring emergency control over every furnace, caravan, and planar access point in Al-Zahir. The emergency charter never fully expired. The event became the consortium's watershed moment, teaching its leaders that uncontrolled innovation and private vent access could threaten the whole city. It also gave them the legal and cultural justification to centralize power. Over the following century, the Foundries grew from a defensive compact into the dominant industrial authority of the region. They bought debt, absorbed failing forges, secured exclusive caravan contracts, and established fortified outposts at every known planar vent. Their products rebuilt cities after wars, armed desert armies, and made long-distance trade possible. At the same time, their monopoly created dependency. Every bridge, furnace, water condenser, caravan seal, and defensive wall now requires consortium materials or certification. Today, the Foundries present themselves as guardians of civilization. Internally, they are struggling with technological leaks, worker unrest, hereditary privilege, unstable vents, and the possibility that their prosperity was built upon a lie about the nature of glass-steel.
Industrial mercantile consortium · Lawful with strong mercantile and authoritarian tendencies. The consortium values stability, controlled innovation, and contractual obligation, but its members disagree sharply over whether order exists to protect people or merely to protect production.
