The Shardveil Network

The Network's first decade was defined by rescue missions and cautious trading in stormglass. Their founders established hidden camps among remote ravines and developed a code based on reflected signals, mirrored tokens, and spoken phrases that changed with the seasons. During the Salt War, the Network smuggled food, medicine, and refugees through territories controlled by both armies. This earned them a reputation as folk heroes among displaced communities, but also gave them access to weapons and political secrets. Their watershed moment came during the Night of Nine Reflections, when nine tears opened simultaneously around the Glass Spires. The Network evacuated three settlements, redirected a collapsing tear away from a crowded market, and salvaged enough stormglass to become wealthy beyond any previous estimate. However, the event also revealed that the tears could be influenced by sound, metal, and human memory. The founders concealed this discovery, fearing that governments and warlords would weaponize it. In the following years, the Network expanded from a rescue operation into a disciplined criminal enterprise. They began charging wealthy clients for relic transport while reserving part of their capacity for refugees and outlawed scholars. This compromise created their defining contradiction. They protect the vulnerable using profits earned from serving dangerous and sometimes monstrous patrons. A decade ago, founder Ilyra Quen disappeared while pursuing the Veiled Atlas. Her absence fractured the leadership. Sareth Vonn became the First Reflection, while Namar the Hollow vanished into the tearlands. Since then, the Network has grown richer, more secretive, and more divided. Recent storms suggest that another Night of Nine Reflections may be approaching.

Smuggling syndicate, clandestine courier network, black-market salvage organization, and informal protection society · Pragmatic and self-serving, with a genuine instinct to protect displaced people and persecuted scholars. Internally, members range from ruthless opportunists to idealistic custodians of forbidden knowledge.

Founder’s Story

The Shardveil Network began when a failed expedition vanished inside a newly opened tear near the western glass ravines. Three survivors returned nine days later, though only six hours had passed outside. They carried stormglass fragments, a map drawn on mirrored leather, and the names of dozens of travelers trapped on the other side. The survivors were Sareth Vonn, a disgraced caravan broker, Ilyra Quen, a relic scholar, and Namar the Hollow, a masked guide who refused to explain where he had learned the routes. They used their first profits to rescue the trapped travelers and establish hidden camps along the ravines. Over time, the rescue network became a smuggling operation, then a syndicate with its own laws, initiation rites, and private intelligence system.

The Mechanism of Intent

Public Goals
  • Keep dangerous contraband out of the hands of reckless rulers.
  • Maintain safe trade routes through the Glass Spires and surrounding ravines.
  • Protect caravans and isolated settlements from raiders.
  • Preserve knowledge that authorities would destroy or suppress.
  • Provide discreet passage to those fleeing war, persecution, or unjust law.
  • Secret Goals
  • Create a protected chain of settlements beyond the legal authority of the Glass Spires.
  • Use the Veiled Atlas to identify and seal the tears that lead to hostile worlds while preserving those that connect refugee routes.
  • Expose the Council of Glass Spires as the original architects of the region's tear experiments.
  • Place loyal agents inside every major faction capable of weaponizing stormglass.
  • Find a way to stabilize tears without using human memories, even if doing so destroys the Network's primary source of wealth.
  • Current Objectives
  • Secure three newly formed tears before the Glass Spires authorities can seal them.
  • Move a shipment of stormglass weapons to an occupied mountain settlement.
  • Find the missing route-finder known as Veyra-of-the-Second-Reflection.
  • Recover a forbidden relic called the Eye Below the Sand before a rival syndicate reaches it.
  • Determine whether the region's increasing storms are caused by Network activity or by something awakening beneath Al-Zahir.
  • Long-Term Vision

A self-sustaining hidden nation of camps, caravans, scholars, refugees, and free traders connected by controlled tear routes. The Network imagines a world where no empire can close every border or monopolize forbidden knowledge.

StructureDecentralized syndicate bound by shared codes, profit sharing, mutual protection, and control of hidden routes
SuccessionThe First Reflection is not inherited automatically. Upon the leader's death, disappearance, or public loss of confidence, the Shard Council selects three candidates. Each candidate must complete a route called the Sevenfold Return, making seven deliveries without revealing which one contains the faction's most important secret. The candidate who preserves the Network's people, routes, and secrets most effectively becomes the next First Reflection. In practice, the process is vulnerable to bribery, sabotage, and arranged disappearances.

    Leadership

    Seressa Vonn The First Reflection

Calm, diplomatic, difficult to read, and protective of her people. She hates needless cruelty but accepts morally ugly choices when she believes they prevent greater catastrophe.

    Seressa Vonn The First Reflection

Measured, observant, warm in private, and terrifyingly decisive when betrayed.

Kharad Vey Veilmaster of the Eastern Ravines

Charismatic, ambitious, patient, and convinced that compassion without power is merely surrender.

Mira Quen Keeper of Forbidden Relics

Brilliant, restless, sarcastic, and prone to taking personal risks for people she barely knows.

Orric Glasshand Master of Accounts and Contraband

Cheerful, vain, practical, and impossible to intimidate for long.

Namar the Hollow Founder and vanished route-master

Cryptic, intensely private, protective of strangers, and increasingly alien after years in the tearlands.
