The Overrun Upper Hall
Snow presses against the castle windows while stolen bells warn of horrors stirring below.
The first upper level of Caer Dineval has become a cramped stronghold for rival bands of goblins, scavengers, and fanatics. The defenders have barricaded routes toward the throne room, while signs of the imprisoned demons below appear as frost, sulfur, and warped shadows in the stone.
Cold wind leaks through arrow slits and cracked shutters, carrying snow, soot, and the faint stink of unwashed bodies. Torchlight gutters blue against damp stone while distant metal scrapes, goblins whisper behind doors, and something below occasionally bellows through the castle foundations.
☠ Threat
A hobgoblin exile named Varkesh has seized the upper floor and now serves as its reluctant warden. He commands the strongest surviving raiders from room-11, but his true fear is the demonic presence beneath the castle. The fiends whisper through the locked stair and promise Varkesh power if he opens it, making his patrols increasingly violent and desperate.
History
Caer Dineval's upper halls were built as private living quarters for the castle's ruling family and their sworn household. Servants used hidden passages to carry messages, food, and weapons between the library, shrine, and treasury. When the castle fell into disorder, the upper floor became a refuge for raiders, while a secret demonic cult below began using the old crypts as a gateway.
Encounter Table
CRA pair of hungry goblin runners carry messages between the Chain Hall and the warden's post.
A frost-bitten wolf with a collar of iron links prowls the halls, driven mad by the demonic seepage below.
A crawling mass of animated castle debris, including broken shields, stones, and frozen bones.
A shadowy imp scouts the upper floor for the demons below, hiding in torch smoke and whispering false directions.
Rumours & Whispers
The upper floor is held by goblins, but something larger is keeping them from fleeing through the lower stair.
A priest's ghost still guards a room where the candles never go out.
The old castle treasury was emptied years ago, yet a hidden coffer remains behind the chapel.
A red light beneath the floor has begun shining through cracks near the warden's post.
The demons in the dungeons are sealed behind a door that can only be opened with the upper warden's key.

A black frost spreads from the mortar around several doors. It melts when touched, leaving behind a faint sulfur smell.
Old arrow loops overlook the corridors from above, though some contain loose stones that can be dropped by creatures hiding in the walls.
A narrow draft carries distant chanting upward from the locked stairwell beyond Room 12.
