Gravebind Crypt
The dead do not rest here, they are being held in place by fading prayers and a hunger beneath the stones.
This crypt was built beneath an abandoned hill chapel and then expanded into a maze of funerary chambers, cells, and shrine rooms. Something in the lower halls has begun animating the dead again, and the deeper chambers still preserve the old rites that can either calm or worsen the awakening.
Cold air crawls through cracked stone, carrying the smell of old incense, damp earth, and long-stale rot. Whispering drafts slip through keyholes and skull vents, while greenish lantern-fungus throws weak light across slick floors, rusted ironwork, and piles of bone dust.
☠ Threat
The crypt's wards are failing, allowing the dead to rise under the influence of a burial spirit that wears the authority of the old abbot like a mask. Lesser undead patrol the halls, traps still defend the sanctified routes, and the deepest shrine chamber hides the force directing the unrest.
History
A century ago, the hill chapel served a burial order that collected plague victims and war dead from the nearby road. The priests built this crypt to keep the restless from wandering, but their final abbot secretly bound a hungry funerary spirit beneath the shrine vaults, using prison cells and warding rites to feed and contain it.
Encounter Table
CRThree skulls bound by cobweb and grave dust that squeal when living flesh nears.

Rumours & Whispers
The old chapel buried plague victims with coins in their mouths, and now the dead have started hoarding silver in the crypt.
A black-robed priest was seen entering the hill at dusk, but only pale footprints came back down.
Dogs refuse to go near the hill after midnight, and bells ring under the earth when it rains.
There is a hidden shrine in the crypt that can bless the living, but only if you speak the dead abbot's name correctly.

A thin channel of black candle wax runs along the floor and steams when blood touches it.
Several corridor arches are draped in funerary chains that rattle softly even without wind.
The stone here is polished by dragging feet, and faint chalk prayers mark the route to the shrines.
