Veyra's Broken Temple

The old sanctuary still shines, but its light has been chained to an iron throne.

12 roomstemplehard

The temple lies beneath a dead hill, its single underground floor carved around a natural cavern of luminous stone. Once a refuge for the persecuted, it is now a brutal duergar redoubt where sacred halls have been turned into prisons, armories, and shrines to domination.

Cold mineral air carries old incense, forge smoke, and the faint copper scent of blood. Pale blue crystal lamps flicker beneath soot-blackened reliefs, while distant hammering and whispered prayers seem to come from behind sealed stone.

☠ Threat

Overseer Kuldraz, a duergar warlord infused with the temple's stolen sanctity, rules from the desecrated high altar beyond room-5. He uses the captive prisoners, corrupted relics, and forge rites to transform ordinary duergar into zealots who believe tyranny is sacred law. Every hour, another fragment of the temple's protective magic is twisted into a weapon against intruders.

History

The temple was built nearly four centuries ago by wandering priests of Saint Veyra, a chaotic good champion who taught that no ruler could claim ownership of another person's life. Its chambers served as sanctuary, hospital, and hidden meeting place for rebels and escaped slaves. Decades ago, duergar excavators broke through the southern rock, slew the clergy, and claimed the temple as a base for raiding the surface.

Corridor Notes

Between Room 1 and rooms-1 through 4

Bronze sunbursts have been pried from the walls, leaving gouges shaped like grasping hands. Beneath them, the original temple carvings show common folk sheltering strangers from a storm.

The corridor outside Room 2

Thick iron chains run along the floor and vanish into wall sockets, suggesting prisoners were dragged toward the eastern chambers.

The central passage from Room 3

A trail of gray dust and tiny black bootprints crosses the junction toward the locked doors near rooms-6 through 8.

The passage between rooms-3, 9, 10, and 11

Broken prayer tiles form a mosaic of a radiant figure with its face deliberately hammered away. A successful DC 16 Religion check identifies the figure as a forgotten chaotic good saint.
