The Warden-King's Crypt
The dead were buried to guard a king who never learned how to die.
The crypt is a sprawling funerary complex built beneath a ruined monastery. Its upper chambers contain abandoned stores, cells, shrines, and false resting places, while deeper halls preserve the remains of a death cult whose leader now stirs beneath a sealed sanctum.
Cold mineral air carries the smell of wet stone, old incense, and disturbed dust. Blue corpse-lights burn in wall niches, while distant chains clink and something heavy drags itself through the lower halls.
☠Threat
Halvek, the Warden-King, is a powerful wight bound to the deepest sanctum. He commands the crypt's dead through soul-channels beneath the shrines, and each disturbed tomb weakens the seals imprisoning a mass of ravenous spirits. If the party breaks the final ward carelessly, Halvek may abandon his chamber and lead the dead into the surface settlements.
History
The crypt was built three centuries ago by the funerary order of Saint Veyra, who buried nobles and plague victims together to deny death its usual hierarchy. When a spirit-feeding curse spread through the region, the order's last master, Halvek, became an undead Warden-King and sealed himself below. The monks died out, but their wards continue to draw power from every corpse entombed here.
