Path of the Mirage

The Path of the Mirage teaches an Elemental to blur the boundary between matter, perception, and motion. Its practitioners weave several elemental expressions into a single deceptive art, turning flame into reflected light, stone into impossible angles, wind into absent footsteps, and water into phantom bodies. A Mirage is not built to hold a battlefield in place; it makes every position temporary, every approach uncertain, and every escape beautiful.

The Path of the Mirage

Spellcasting & Powers

You remain a full caster through the Elemental class, using Intelligence for your spells. This subclass emphasizes illusion, transformation, mobility, concealment, and terrain manipulation. Your subclass features do not grant additional spell slots or replace Elemental spellcasting.

Disguise Self A foundational illusion for elemental disguises and infiltration.
Fog Cloud Creates concealment that complements shifting terrain and hidden movement.
Silent Image Produces visual decoys, false cover, and misleading battlefield landmarks.

2nd-Level Spells

Blur Makes your outline shimmer between elemental appearances.
Misty Step A short-range escape that feels like dissolving into vapor, spray, or sparks.
Mirror Image Creates unstable reflections that confuse attackers.
Pass Without Trace Wraps a group in muffled wind, smoke, drifting sand, or reflected footsteps.

3rd-Level Spells

Major Image Builds convincing elemental scenes, creatures, and false terrain.
Meld into Stone Lets you infiltrate through stone while maintaining the path’s transformation theme.
Water Breathing Supports fluid infiltration and aquatic elemental expression.
Wind Wall Creates a beautiful moving barrier that redirects sight, missiles, and approach.

4th-Level Spells

Dimension Door A dramatic relocation through a flash of fractured elemental space.
Greater Invisibility Turns the caster into a nearly impossible target while preserving offensive mobility.
Hallucinatory Terrain Transforms a broad region into uncertain, beautiful, and tactically misleading ground.
Stone Shape Quietly opens, seals, or alters terrain for infiltration and escape.

5th-Level Spells

Mislead Separates your apparent self from your true position during critical operations.
Seeming Allows an entire group to adopt coordinated elemental disguises.
Transmute Rock Makes solid terrain unstable, passable, or tactically unusable.
Project Image Extends your presence across a battlefield while preserving uncertainty about your location.

Multiclassing

If your table uses multiclassing prerequisites, Intelligence 13 is required to multiclass into or out of Elemental. This subclass grants no additional armor or weapon proficiencies.

Proficiencies

You gain proficiency in either Deception or Stealth at Elemental level 3. If you already have proficiency in the chosen skill, you gain Expertise in it instead. You gain no additional armor, weapon, tool, or saving throw proficiencies.

Training & Initiation

Initiates are taught to observe how different elements deceive the senses: heat bends distance, water doubles images, smoke erases edges, sand buries landmarks, and stone creates blind angles. Their final trial requires crossing a dangerous location while instructors, allies, and hostile creatures all receive different instructions about where the initiate truly is. Those who succeed learn to anchor their real position only long enough to act, then let the world become uncertain again.

Societal Perception

Common people often find Mirages beautiful until they realize how easily a Mirage can make a familiar street feel hostile. Merchants hire them as guides and security experts, rulers fear them as infiltrators, and soldiers consider them dangerous because their magic undermines formations, landmarks, and certainty.
