Kassoon Alternatives: 5 D&D Generator Tools I Tested in 2026

Kassoon is the most thorough free D&D 5e generator set I have used. Town generation with linked shops and NPCs, stat blocks across three editions, encounter building, no-prep modules. All free, most without any signup. The gap is visual content and campaign memory. There is no portrait, no map, and no way to link the NPC you just rolled to the settlement they live in. These are the five tools I compared against it for the same campaign prep block.

Same campaign, same prompts, same target output, with the tradeoffs that actually showed up in my run.

CharGen

AI generators with linked entities, portraits, and campaign memory.

What I use weekly. CharGen covers most of Kassoon's generator catalogue, NPCs, settlements, shops, dungeons, names, but adds a layer Kassoon cannot touch: context. Every NPC links to a settlement, every settlement to a faction, and every entity comes with a portrait, a token, and a session-note hook. The trade against Kassoon is account overhead and a credit budget. Kassoon is free forever with no signup at all. CharGen's free tier is capped and requires an account. For DMs who prep long-form campaigns and want generated content to connect and carry visuals, CharGen is the cleaner workflow.

What it does well

  • Context-linked generation, NPCs connect to settlements, factions, and regions
  • AI portraits, tokens, and maps alongside every entity
  • Free tier covers casual prep with no card required
  • Session memory and entity linkage for recurring characters

What it doesn't

  • Account required, Kassoon works without any signup
  • Free credit cap is more restrictive than Kassoon's unlimited free use
  • Less raw mechanical depth on stat blocks than Kassoon's multi-edition output
Best for

DMs who want generated content that links together, carries visuals, and survives from session to session.

Donjon

Reliable table-driven generators, truly signup-free for over a decade.

Donjon is what most DMs reach for first. Signup-free, instant, covering name tables, dungeon layouts, NPC rolls, treasure, and calendars across multiple editions. The output is flatter than Kassoon's: Donjon's town is a paragraph, Kassoon's town is a linked ecosystem of shops and NPCs. But Donjon loads faster, needs no account, and its dungeon map generator is stronger than Kassoon's. If you are migrating away from Kassoon for a more minimal fallback, Donjon is the obvious swap.

Best for

DMs who want Kassoon's zero-friction approach but lean on dungeon maps rather than town ecosystems.

Fantasy Name Generators

The deepest free name generator library for D&D and beyond.

Kassoon's name generator is solid but culture-flat. Every name reads as generic fantasy. Fantasy Name Generators runs hundreds of culture-coded variants: Iberian coastal cities, grimdark dwarven holds, Japanese-coded moon elves, Norse sea raiders. For sessions where a name landing wrong breaks the vibe, this is the right specialist. Entirely free, no signup, and fast. The site only does names. If you need stat blocks or encounter tables alongside your name run, you still need Kassoon or CharGen for that.

Best for

DMs who find Kassoon's name output too generic and want culture-coded names at scale.

Kobold+ Fight Club

The most accurate free encounter balance calculator for D&D 5e.

Kobold+ Fight Club does one thing Kassoon's encounter builder does not: it gets the maths right. Kassoon uses the DMG difficulty bands, which are notoriously optimistic at mid and high levels. Kobold+ applies a corrected multiplier model that accounts for monster action economy. The result is that encounters flagged as Hard in Kassoon become Deadly in Kobold+, and that accuracy matters when your party has just hit tier 3. Not a replacement for Kassoon's generators. A specialist upgrade to the one piece of Kassoon that DMs report getting wrong most often.

Best for

DMs whose Kassoon-built encounters keep landing easier or harder than the difficulty tag suggested.

Perchance

Build your own custom generators when Kassoon's tables don't fit your setting.

Perchance is a generator builder rather than a generator. Where Kassoon gives you curated D&D 5e tables, Perchance gives you the tools to write your own. The template syntax is simple enough that most DMs have a working custom generator in an afternoon. Community generators for D&D NPCs, treasure, and encounter hooks already exist in the public library. For DMs running homebrew settings where Kassoon's generic tables break immersion, Perchance is the right solution. Free, and no account required to use public generators.

Best for

DMs on homebrew settings where Kassoon's generic tables break immersion and who want tables tuned to their world.

Choose by problem

Match the job, then the tool.

Most tool decisions are job decisions in disguise. Pick the row that fits your real prep problem.

  1. 01

    If

You want generated content that connects, carries visuals, and persists between sessions

    Use

    CharGen

CharGen's linked entity model gives every NPC a settlement, every settlement a faction, and every entity a portrait, all in one workspace.

  2. 02

    If

You prefer even more minimal output and stronger dungeon map generation over town ecosystems

    Use

    Donjon

Donjon is truly zero-signup and its dungeon layout generator is stronger than Kassoon's, at the cost of less cohesive town output.

  3. 03

    If

Kassoon's name output feels too generic for your setting

    Use

    Fantasy Name Generators

Fantasy Name Generators offers hundreds of culture-coded name tables that Kassoon's single name generator cannot match.

  4. 04

    If

Your encounters keep landing easier or harder than Kassoon's difficulty tag suggested

    Use

    Kobold+ Fight Club

Kobold+ Fight Club's corrected multiplier model is more accurate than Kassoon's DMG-based difficulty bands, particularly at mid and high levels.

  5. 05

    If

You run a homebrew setting where Kassoon's generic tables break immersion

    Use

    Perchance

Perchance lets you write generator tables tuned to your world's geography, culture, and naming conventions.

Switching from Kassoon

How to switch in ten minutes.

If you have been using Kassoon for NPC stat blocks and town generation, the switch to CharGen takes around fifteen minutes for the first prep block. Open the NPC Generator, set the role and a couple of visual anchors (armour type, notable feature), and CharGen returns a portrait, stat hook, and one-line personality. The NPC saves to your workspace and links to the settlement you tag it with. Your existing Kassoon output is still valid for quick fallback rolls on encounter tables and names. You do not abandon Kassoon outright, you stop reaching for it as the default for content that needs to carry into next session.

FAQ

Common DM questions about this lineup.

Q01

What is the best free Kassoon alternative in 2026?

Donjon is the closest free alternative with zero signup, covering NPCs, dungeon maps, names, and treasure tables. CharGen's free tier is more powerful but requires an account. For name generation specifically, Fantasy Name Generators beats both on culture depth. The right pick depends on whether you want broader coverage or specialised depth.

Q02

Is Kassoon still worth using if I have these alternatives?

Yes for encounter building and no-prep modules. Kassoon's encounter builder is faster than building a custom Perchance table, and its no-prep adventure modules have no close free equivalent. Most DMs pair Kassoon's encounter tools with CharGen for NPC and settlement generation rather than treating them as strict alternatives.

Q03

Which alternative produces the best NPC stat blocks?

Kassoon itself produces the strongest free 5e stat blocks. Among these alternatives, CharGen produces the most usable NPCs overall because it adds portraits and session hooks alongside the mechanics. Donjon's NPC output is lighter. Fantasy Name Generators, Kobold+, and Perchance do not generate stat blocks at all.

Q04

Does Kassoon support Pathfinder or older D&D editions?

Yes. Kassoon's NPC generator supports D&D 5e, D&D 3.5e, and Pathfinder. Some tools are 5e-only. Donjon has the broadest edition support including OSR and older editions. CharGen is primarily D&D-focused.

Q05

What is the best encounter builder alternative to Kassoon?

Kobold+ Fight Club. Its corrected multiplier model produces more accurate difficulty ratings than Kassoon's DMG-based bands, particularly at mid and high levels where action economy swings the most. Free, open-source, no signup required.

Q06

Can I use multiple alternatives alongside Kassoon?

Yes, and most DMs do. The most effective pairing I have tested is CharGen for NPCs and settlements, Kobold+ Fight Club for encounter balance, and Fantasy Name Generators when a name needs cultural specificity. Kassoon stays in the workflow as the encounter table fallback. Each tool does one thing well, and the overlap is small enough that juggling three or four is manageable.
